Neuroevolution Neuroevolution is a method for optimizing neural network weights and topologies using evolutionary computation. It is particularly useful in sequential decision tasks that are partially observable (i.e. POMDP) and where the state and action spaces are large (or continuous). Our work focuses on theory, algorithms, and applications of neuroevolution as described in numerous papers and demos in this site.

Reinforcement Learning In reinforcement earning tasks the desired behavior is not known; only sparse feedback on how well the agent is doing is provided. Reinforcement learning techniques include value-function and policy iteration methods (note that although evolutionary computation and neuroevolution can also be seen as reinforcement learning methods, they are listed separately in our area hierarchy). Our research in reinforcement learning includes real-world applications such as packet routing, satellite communication, robot navigation, and sensorimotor embedding.

Evolutionary Computation Evolutionary Computation is a biologically inspired machine learning method that aims to solve (or optimize) complex problems by performing an intelligent parallel search in the solution space. Our research in this area focuses primarily on evolving neural networks, or neuroevolution, but also includes work in theory, estimation of distribution algorithms, and particle swarming. Applications include control, robotics, resource optimization, game playing, and artificial life.

Applications Much of our work on applications involves neuroevolution of behavior in real-world domains such as control, robotics, game playing, and artificial life, but also design and optimization of wavelets, sorting networks, musical score, proofs, and resource allocations. Other areas include reinforcement learning in robotics, packet routing, and satellite communication, unsupervised learning for pattern recognition and visualization, and supervised learning for applicant evaluation, intrusion detection, and process control.

Robotics Our work in robotics focuses on neuroevolution of intelligent locomotion and navigation, as well as cooperation among multiple robots. We have also worked on learning sensorimotor embeddings through unsupervised and reinforcement learning.

Artificial Life Artificial life is a broad field that involves imitating life in software, hardware, and biochemistry. Our work in this area focuses on computational modeling of behavior in simulated agents and teams of agents. In many cases, the behavior is modeled using neural networks and developed using neuroevolution. Specific topics include hierarchical and multimodal behaviors, social behavior, cooperation and competition, and communication.
